Animal Spotlight: The Giraffe

Tall. Lean. Graceful. Magnificent. Can you guess which African animal encompasses all of these characteristics? If you guessed the giraffe, you’re absolutely right.

Known for being the tallest mammal in the world, the giraffe is also one of the most spectacular to observe in nature. In fact, some people go to Africa for the sole purpose of seeing a giraffe in at least once in their lifetime. Observing the giraffe’s towering neck, friendly aura, peculiar black tongue, and mesmerizing colors and patterns is unlike any other experience, making this creature one of Africa’s most unique animals.

What else makes these animals so spectacular?
  • The average giraffe’s legs are 6 ft. tall, while the neck can be 20 ft. tall! Their total body height is around 13 – 15 ft.—and they’re quite lanky.
  • They can sprint up to 35 miles per hour.

  • Remember the black tongue mentioned above? It can grow anywhere from 18 - 21 in. long!
  • Giraffe’s travel in herds ranging from 20 – 40 individuals and are led by a male giraffe—also known as a bull.

  • Each giraffe has a different set of patterns, which are unique to that individual giraffe.

  • While the average human baby is around 7 ounces, the average giraffe baby is around 6 ft. tall and weighs 100 – 150 lbs. and endures a nice 6 ft. drop as the mother gives birth—agonizing for both the mother and the baby. Wouldn't you say?
Game drives, walking safaris, and horseback riding safaris, are some of the best ways to observe a giraffe herd up close. Watching their gentle movements offers a refreshing change from observing a lion pounce on its prey.

Culture Spotlight: The San Tribe’s Bushmen

An African Safari vacation is not just about the sightseeing and game-viewing—it’s about experiencing a unique culture completely separate from your own. One of the most intriguing and unique cultures in all of Africa is the San Tribe’s Bushmen. The emotional and spiritual fulfillment of immersing yourself in this unique culture cannot be matched by any other experience.

Known as hunters and gatherers, the people of this culture were the earliest settlers in the Kalahari Desert region. There is an estimated 85,000 indigenous Bushmen alive today, according to National Geographic magazine. The Bushmen’s legendary history dates back tens of thousands of years ago. In fact, according to several genetic studies, all of humankind can be traced back to these people.

Enjoy an interactive walk with them through the villages, as they share with you their extensive knowledge about survival and the secrets of the land. Hear them interact through a unique language, which consists of various “click” sounds. This rare insight into the intriguing San Tribe allows you to learn about their effective hunting skills and crafting skills. Discover how to make an authentic bow and arrow from natural resources, and understand which wild plants are edible and which ones aren’t.

The tribe’s immense respect for nature is illustrated through their lifestyle choices. They do not cultivate crops, or keep cattle or any other animals. Their knowledge about plants is so extensive, that they know which ones to eat for nutritional purposes, and which ones to use for medicinal purposes. The act of going out together to gather plants is a huge social activity for the community.

Another way they show this respect for nature is through their hunting traditions. When they kill an animal for food they use every part of the animal, wasting nothing. The tribesmen usually hunt zebra, lion, antelope, and other wild game, and use the meat for food, and the hides for blankets.

While on a Botswana family safari, or honeymoon safari prepare to be bewildered by the Bushmen’s legendary history as you spend time with them in a local village opening your mind to an exceptional and diverse culture. Understanding the Bushmen’s deep respect for nature is not only enlightening, but humbling, as well. Contact Hills of Africa Travel today at (877) 845-4802, to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.

Soul Safari to Africa with Ainslie MacLeod: The Itinerary

Are you ready to take a once in this lifetime journey to South Africa where you will uncover the innermost secrets of your life's purpose and discover the spiritual pathway to Living the Life your Soul Intended?

Then, join author and psychic Ainslie MacLeod on an expedition to uncover your soul’s unique purpose in this life. On this 9-day Soul Safari, you’ll explore the mysteries of the life plan your soul created before you were even born, and learn to harness your own spirituality to create a happier and more fulfilling future—one of total self-acceptance and endless potential.

THE ITINERARY
Dates: October 19–27, 2009
9 days/8 nights
We carefully crafted the itinerary for our “Soul Safari with Ainslie MacLeod.” It consists of only 2 destinations; Madikwe and Cape Town, but don’t let its simplicity fool you. It is one powerful journey!

October 19 – 23 (1st 4 nights)
Destination: Madikwe
Accommodation: Madikwe Safari Lodge

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve marks the ecological transition point from the Savannah to the Kalahari Desert. This diversity of ecological habitat results in a very broad base of animals. Home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant) game viewing is excellent. Professional and skilled rangers will deliver a world-class interpretive experience of the bush in 4X4 safari vehicles. Photographic opportunities of the reserve’s fauna, flora and topography are excellent.

The reserve was proclaimed in August 1991 and is currently one of South Africa's largest game reserves and best-kept secrets. This reserve has the distinction of being one of the few game reserves in the world to be established purely because it was the most appropriate and sustainable land use for the area. The reserve consists of vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands, dissected and bordered by rugged mountain ranges and rocky hills. The re-stocking of Madikwe with animals indigenous to the area began in mid-1991. Since then, more than 8,000 animals of 28 species have been introduced in the largest game translocation exercise in the world at that time.

Madikwe Safari Lodge
Madikwe Safari Lodge offers nothing short of luxurious hospitality and spectacular wildlife encounters in a malaria-free environment. The camp has a total of 20 suites with no luxury forgotten. Guests will enjoy the large bedroom area, their own private plunge pool, circular fireplace, spacious dressing area, personal bar, and private bathroom with a choice of indoor or outdoor shower.

October 23– 27 (2nd 4 nights)

Destination: Cape Town
Accommodation: 12 Apostles

Cape Town

The "Mother City" was the first South African port established by European settlers in the 16th century. Cape Town is the cultural and creative epicenter of South Africa, with more artists, designers and poets choosing the melting-pot palette of people and natural beauty of Cape Town as their inspirational home.

Visitors to Cape Town can explore the dichotomy of a less-than-perfect past with a present and future full of possibility – a discourse that many creative people can fully engage with and which visitors will instinctively relate to.

From the curated exploration of cultural, historical and social issues by Iziko Museums to the exhibition of musical street life in the Mother City’s townships, Cape Town has a strong creative economy and a treasure chest of talent of music, dance, theatre, poetry, fashion, art, culinary skill and design.

Cape Point and Boulders Beach
One of the most popular tours which offers a spectacular coastal journey through to Cape Point – the romantic meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This area along the Peninsula boasts some of the most breathtaking and unique scenery in the world. It combines a fascinating collage of beaches, mountain ranges and wildlife.

Boulders Beach and the Penguin Colony
Boulders beach is an idyllic beach located close to Simonstown heading towards Cape Point. This unique beach is perhaps more popular due to its inhabitants, a colony of some 3000 African Jackass penguins. It is said a pair of the penguins first settled in 1982 and the colony has steadily grown ever since.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is well known around the world for the diversity of indigenous plants cultivated there and the scenic mountain setting. Half of South Africa's species of flowering plants are cultivated, including about 9000 varieties of indigenous plants unique to the Cape South Africa - locally known as Cape 'fynbos'. There are also many specimens of rare and endangered plants on display.

Cape Town City and Table Mountain

Take a step back in time and join us on an exploration of the “Mother City” – its views, its history and its people.

Table Mountain
The ancient Table Mountain often draped in swirling cloud and flanked by its attendants Devil's Peak and Lion's Head, forms an impressive backdrop to the sprawling city of Cape Town and is a well known subject for many postcards and photographs. It stands at the head of a chain of mountains forming the Cape Peninsula National Park which follow the line of the Peninsula to Cape Point.

Animal Spotlight: The Gorilla

Native to Rwanda, Uganda, and parts of the Congo, the mountain gorilla is one of the most mesmerizing and delightful creatures to observe in the entire world. Observing a creature believed to be an evolutionary link to man, makes gorilla tracking safaris an extremely unique and rewarding experience. Encountering these intimidating creatures is a once in a lifetime opportunity, that is both rare and adventurous in scope.

Mountain gorillas are an endangered species with only a few hundred still surviving today. According to an article on the Animal Planet website, “The mountain gorillas are the only great apes whose numbers are actually growing. Although this species remains endangered, their numbers have grown from 248 to over 360 individuals in the Virunga Massif in Rwanda alone. The total number of mountain gorillas is estimated to be 700-750 individuals.”

There are several factors, which have led to such a massive decrease in the mountain gorilla population. One factor has been people destroying forests and therefore destroying the habitats of these enormous creatures. Also, poachers sell the mountain gorillas’ meat and fur for commercial purposes.

Shocking Mountain Gorilla Facts:
  • Communicable human diseases have been known to affect the gorilla population. Gorillas can catch the flu, measles, tuberculosis, and other viruses from human contact.

  • Full-grown male adults weigh approximately 500 lbs.

  • When threatened, the mountain gorilla will push off the ground, balance on its back legs, and pound its chest.

  • Mountain gorillas are classified mainly as herbivorous, but have been known to eat small animals.

  • Wild mountain gorillas usually live to be around 35 years-old.

  • Species of gorilla include the western lowland gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas, and the mountain gorillas.

Seeing a gorilla in the wild is difficult to describe. You can feel the adrenaline pump through your veins as they rise from the ground with a grunt and pound the ground as they walk through the forest. If you’re ready to experience the enchanting adventure of gorilla tracking on an African family safari or honeymoon safari, contact Hills of Africa Travel today at (877) 845-4802. Our expert team is dedicated to creating the perfect itinerary, tailored to each client’s personal preferences.

Uthando Foundation: Helping the Children of Africa in Need

Based in Africa, the non-profit organization, the Uthando Foundation exudes just as much beauty and inspiration as the hills and sprawling plains of its African homeland. The Foundation is dedicated to helping the children of Africa in need. Hills of Africa Travel believes in the Uthando Foundation’s efforts and we do as much as we can to be a part of their revolutionary cause. We participate in many Uthando events, and programs in order to give back to the community and help a people who are just as extraordinary as the land they live in.

The mission of this phenomenal foundation is “To raise moral and financial support for children who are infected or affected by the HIV / AIDS crisis in South Africa.” Included in these efforts are, providing necessities to children who have become orphans due to HIV / AIDS or parents who are unable to provide for the children because of the disease. The necessities Uthando provides those children in need include food, shelter, education, a positive and playful environment, and medical needs.

The Uthando Foundation and Hills of Africa Travel believe in educating the local population, as well as the international population, about the devastating effects HIV / AIDS has on the children of Africa and on the population as a whole. The Uthando Foundation works to increase awareness of the disease in the community, by hosting workshops, classes, and community projects, dedicated to helping people provide for themselves. The Foundation also strives to teach Dutch and South African children about other cultures, the problems these cultures face, and the lifestyles associated with these various cultures. These teachings are done in order to facilitate a greater understanding within these children—an understanding that there is a world outside of their own.

Implementing their objectives into actions, the Uthando Foundation organizes projects and events, which serve in the absolute best interest of the community.

Projects the Uthando Foundation is currently working on:
  • Re-building and lending emotional and financial support to the Agape Orphanage in KwaZulu-Natal. Uthando personnel frequently visit the orphanage to lend emotional support to the children and listen to their concerns and feelings. Uthando’s rebuilding efforts are in response to the January, 2005, orphanage fire. The Foundation has been working diligently to raise money, awareness, and volunteers to help in the re-building process. Recently, the Foundation sent ten Agape children to Holland to generate publicity for the orphanage and raise as much money as possible. The trip was a great success, raising $37,000 in donations. The combination of the Holland trip donations and past donations is enough to re-build the Agape Orphanage!

  • Participating in the Bobbie Bear Project. This project is dedicated to lending support and therapy to children affected by rape. Sexually abused children, as well as women, have a place to go for therapy, information, and emotional support.

  • The Education Fund opens the door for a better future for the children living in poverty. This project provides children in need with an education that allows them to survive in the world, and have the opportunity to grow in life.

Hills of Africa Travel is a dedicated supporter, and participant in the Uthando Foundation’s projects and efforts. We strive to create awareness of their mission and encourage everyone to visit the Uthando Foundation website to learn more or make a donation. What is an African Safari Vacation?

When many people think of an African safari, they only envision one type—an adventure in a rugged vehicle, bouncing about the rolling terrain of Africa. This is absolutely true, but there are also several other types of safaris that are just as exhilarating, and shouldn’t be overlooked when planning your trip to Africa. Although a vehicle safari is a must while on your African safari trip, there are plenty of other types of safaris you may not be aware of, that are unique and just as exciting.

Did you ever think there could be five different types of an African safari vacation?

  • A game-drive safari or vehicle safari could be considered the most traditional. The thrill of the vehicle’s invigorating speed and ruggedness create a truly authentic safari. Vehicle safaris offer an exceptional view of wild game throughout the area, and allow you to sit back and enjoy the excitement of a lion attacking its prey unravel before your eyes. Most luxurious lodges and camps offer excellent vehicle safaris.

  • A walking safari allows you to connect with nature on a whole new level. The movement and feel of this safari is completely opposite to a vehicle safari, as you can feel the ground beneath your feet, and are on a different height level than a vehicle. A walking safari offers the same fantastic game-viewing experience and adventure as a vehicle safari, while offering a different perspective on nature. Zambia’s Luangwa National Park is famous for its exceptional walking safaris.

  • A canoe safari boasts a fresh perspective on animal behavior. The rivers and water holes provide a place for animals to bathe, play, and drink from. Watch a hippo charge into the water or a baby elephant play with his mother. In addition to observing animals behaving in a different environment, a canoe safari boasts a large variety of birds and water-dwelling animals, which cannot be seen on any other type of safari. The Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is the ideal place to enjoy a canoe safari.

  • A balloon safari is one of the most interesting safaris there is. This one-of-a-kind safari is truly a unique adventure since riders have a bird’s-eye-view of the land, and can observe nature from a whole new perspective. Game-viewing is spectacular as you glide above the treetops, and soak in the picturesque moments. Enjoy a hot-air balloon safari at Singita Grumeti Reserve in Tanzania, and experience an out-of-this-world escapade.

  • A horseback safari is arguably one of the most adventurous safaris there is. Running with a herd of zebra on horseback is an experience that cannot be matched by any other. Feel the adrenaline rush through your veins as you ride along the sprawling hills and observe spectacular creatures and the Big Five at close proximity. Singita Grumeti Reserve in Tanzania now offers horseback safaris for experienced riders.

Don’t miss the bountiful opportunities that await you in Africa. Let Hills of Africa Travel plan the perfect, tailored itinerary for your next African family safari or honeymoon safari. Contact us today at (877) 845-4802, and experience an unforgettable journey.

A trip this luxurious, stunning, and adventurous is well-worth our time finding you exactly what you want. Nothing pleases us more than making our clients happy.

One of our expert Hills of Africa travel agents will create an original itinerary molded around your personality and preferences. We carefully combine authentic safaris, personalized services, activities of your choosing, and accommodations of your choosing, to create a life-alerting vacation, filled with spectacular memories.

Our questionnaire includes questions that are unique and carefully designed to ensure we plan the perfect trip for you. Some sample questions are:
  • Have you traveled to Africa before?
  • What are your hobbies, interests, passions?
  • What is your favorite flower?
  • Do you like champagne or wine?
  • Do you prefer red or white wine?
  • What car do you drive?
  • For a last minute getaway, where would you choose?
Once you’ve answered the questionnaire, we set up a phone call with you to discuss what you’re specifically looking for on your African safari vacation. Your answers to these detailed questions allow us to craft from scratch, the activities that fit your preferences. For example, if you’re a wine connoisseur, and not just any wine connoisseur, a red wine connoisseur, we would suggest an itinerary which includes Cape Winelands in it. How to Prepare to Go Up In The Air - Nourishing Self Care for Flyers

The following article was kindly written for Hills of Africa Travel by our friend Vicki Heise, Founder of Live Your Healthy Life. Vicki is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor and will help you discover the lifestyle choices that work best for you in making gradual, lifelong changes for your healthy life. To contact Vicki please see "Live Your Healthy Life" or call her on 614 735-3375. Thank you Vicki, for helping our clients and all travelers to Prepare for Going Up In The Air.

Congratulations! You’re getting ready to fly away on the trip of your dreams!

As you start planning and making a list of what to take with you, don’t forget to plan for that long plane ride. It can make your flight more enjoyable and make a difference in how you feel after you land.

Common complaints from travelers include swollen ankles, upset stomachs and stiffness. So what can you do to help minimize or eliminate these side effects?

What You Drink Really Does Matter
Air inside planes is extremely dry. A few days before your flight start drinking water to replace alcohol, coffee, tea and soda. These drinks can dry your insides out. Tell the flight attendant “no thank you” to these during the flight - keep drinking water to stay hydrated. Enjoy that cocktail or coffee after you’ve landed. If you have any concerns about the safety of the water on board, buy bottled water after going through the security checkpoint.

Eat Light to Enjoy The Flight
Traveling and not being on your regular schedule can be stressful. So eat light during the flight. Bring easy to pack, nutritious foods with you. Pick your favorites, like unsalted nuts, dried/fresh fruit, cut up veggies, cheese, whole grain crackers/snack bars and dark chocolate. Mix together nuts, dried fruit and dark chocolate chips for a treat! If your stomach starts to growl, dream about the wonderful meals you will be enjoying at your destination.

Tip for Your Tummy
For upset stomachs and to alleviate motion sickness symptoms, consider packing some dried pieces of ginger. You can now find bags of individually wrapped pieces at health food stores and many grocery stores.

Wiggle in Your Seat - Dance in the Aisle
Seriously! Sitting for long periods causes blood to not circulate as well as it should. To avoid the complications this can cause, move. Tighten your back end muscles and release, stretch your legs under the seat and flex your feet, bend your knees and raise your feet up and down off the floor, do anything that you can think of to not stay in the same position. Stand up, walk up and down the aisle, hop, dance, do anything that gets your blood circulating. Do this often, especially on a long flight.

Then sit back and enjoy your flight!
